Apple and Google Maps history

Marcin Wichary curates Justin O’Beirne’s series on the evolution of #Apple and #Google Maps’ style, content, and #POI coverage over the years. Justin’s articles are a few years old, but the insights on web #cartography and real-world use cases are still well worth reading if you work with (or even just use) #webmaps.

2nd degree recommendation: At (the also great) Unsung, Marcin Wichary highlights a series of carefully illustrated articles by Justin O’Beirne that document and discuss the (sometimes surprisingly dynamic1) evolution of style and content of Apple and Google Maps over the years, for example about the churn of POIs2.

Another interesting example is the anecdote about firefighters’ map use highlighted by Marcin. The articles are a few years old, but the insights are still relevant and interesting to read if you work with web maps.
