Heather Smith and the Tutorials team at Esri have published a blog post on writing effective tutorials about GIS and geospatial topics. However, the most valuable part is not the blog post itself but the draft tutorial it links to, which includes explanations and instructions for tutorial writers.1 On a separate page, there is a collection of six tips from the Tutorials team on how to improve your tutorial-writing skills, offering excellent advice.
This post reminded my of another one: Already 10 years (!) ago2, Katy DeCorah (then at Mapbox, now at Microsoft) published Writing for everyone:
This concise collection of tips offers outstanding advice on writing technical content clearly and with empathy for readers.3 Definitely recommended reading.
Footnotes
This material is presented in the form of a so-called ArcGIS StoryMap, but the ideas in the material are system- and vendor-independent.↩︎
You can probably tell: It clearly left a mark, it was so eye-opening for me at the time. Thanks to my “second brain”, I was able to find this resource again.↩︎
And probably a reason why, in my view, Mapbox was a breath of fresh air at the time.↩︎
